Romania's number of fixed Internet connections enabling speeds of at least 100Mbps continued to increase in 2017, reaching 3.2 million or 67 percent of all the fixed Internet connections, according to statistics from telecommunications authority Ancom. Moreover, 11 percent of fixed Internet connections range from 30Mbps to 100Mbps, 13 percent from 10 to 30Mbps, only 9 percent enabling speeds up to 10Mbps, according Telecompaper. The total number of fixed Internet connections in Romania reached 4.8 million at the end of 2017, increasing by 7 percent compared to the previous year.
A total traffic of 5.1 million TB was achieved in 2017, while the average monthly consumption per connection reached 92 GB.
The number of fibre optic connections almost doubled, growing 94 percent to 1.1 million. Fixed Internet penetration rate per 100 households was 58 percent, up 4 percentage points year-on-year, the authority said.
The number of fixed Internet connections in the rural area witnessed a significant increase of over 13 percent compared to the end of the previous year, reaching 1.4 million. In urban areas, this number recorded a slighter growth by only 5 percent to 3.4 million. The penetration rate was 71 percent in urban and 41 percent in rural areas.
The usage level of fixed telephony continued the downward trend in 2017, with decreases in both the number of access lines, down 5 percent to 3.9 million, and especially in the voice traffic segment, down 16 percent to 2.7 billion minutes. The monthly average traffic achieved from a fixed line reached 57 minutes, 8 minutes less than the average value of 2016.
